THE provinces of Ilocos Norte and Cebu will share best practices in renewable energy development and tourism as “sisters.”
Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday signed at the Cebu provincial Capitol a memorandum of understanding establishing sisterhood ties between their provinces.
“We have very few tourists in Ilocos Norte, very little tourism enterprise and that’s where we need to learn from Cebuanos in furniture, fashion and in all aspects of hospitality,” Marcos told reporters.
In turn, Marcos said Ilocos Norte can share its success in renewable energy with its windmills and mini-hydroelectric plants.
Marcos said the current nuclear disaster in Japan underscored the need to invest in this.
“Renewable energy needs a long-term commitment and we were worried that the LGU would have trouble meeting the financial obligation.
“Luckily, a lot of aid agencies now give opportunities, windows for financing,” Marcos said.
She said northern Cebu could be a site for windmills but that it would take 10 to 15 years of study before this could be implemented.
Garcia will visit Ilocos Norte for the formal signing of the MOU.
Marcos said that she wants Garcia to sign on July 2 so that she could also attend the birthday of her mother, Rep. Imelda Marcos.
Governor Garcia supported the senatorial bid of Imee’s brother, Bongbong, in the May 2010 national elections.
In turn, the Marcos family supported her reelection bid.
