MANILA, Philippines – It will finally be goodbye for Ilocos Sur Representative Ronald Singson in the House of Representatives next week.
The chamber is expected to formally accept his resignation on Monday by adopting a resolution acknowledging his decision to give up his post after getting an 18-month sentence from the Wan Chai District Court in Hong Kong for drug trafficking, Majority Leader and Mandaluyong Representative Neptali Gonzales II said.
On Monday, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. will introduce a resolution on Singson’s resignation that will be adopted during the session. The resolution will officially drop Singson from the roll of House members, Gonzales said.
“By Monday next week, the plenary will adopt a resolution accepting his (Singson) resignation. I’m sure nobody will oppose that. After adopting it, we will drop his name from the roll,” said Gonzales after the resignation letter of Singson dated Feb. 28, 2011 reached the office of Belmonte Tuesday.
Gonzales said it was the plenary that could act on Singson’s resignation, and not just the House leaders.
Sessions were called off Tuesday and Wednesday because of the malfunctioning airconditioning system in plenary.
The House leadership has yet to decide how to replace Singson.
Under Republic Act 6645 which implements Section 9, Article VI of the Constitution, vacancies occurring at least one year before the next regular elections may be filled through a special election called by the House.
