Among the many updates
coming with iOS 6, it appears the latest beta version has begun
migrating people over to iCloud.com email addresses. Anyone who
registers a new Apple ID with iCloud will be given an @iCloud.com
address, instead of the previous @me.com addresses users were given when
MobileMe was still a service.
Anyone who currently has an me.com address, and joins iCloud with the
same Apple ID, will be given a matching address with the iCloud.com
suffix. This is all part of the ongoing migration from MobileMe – which
shut down on June 30 – to the replacement iCloud service. It has also
been reported by our readers that users of the new iOS 6 Beta 3
are now receiving a notification regarding this switch, and the final
version of iOS 6 will inevitably include this migration feature.
It seems a bit counter-intuitive to be switching everyone over to an email address that’s four characters longer
than their current one, but evidently Apple is serious about iCloud
becoming the one-stop-shop for everything related to the Apple network,
with MobileMe being quickly swept under the rug.
