VIGAN CITY, July 19 (PIA) -- team Ilocos Sur bagged 21 medals in the recently concluded 5th World’s Taekwondo Culture Expo held in Muju, South Korea last July 8-13, this year.
Last Saturday, “Team Ilocos Sur” Taekwondo Coach Franklin Singson led the taekwondo players in making a courtesy call to Ilocos Sur Governor Luis Chavit Singson at his residence in Baluarte, Vigan City.
In his presentation, Coach Singson disclosed that of the 21 medals won by the Taekwondo Team from the Kyorligi (sparring competition) and Poomsae (form competition), 5 were gold, 8 silver and 8 bronzes.
He said the prestigous world’s Taekwondo tournament was attended by 31 countries with at least 2,000 participating athletes.
With the accomplishment of the team, Coach Singson said that his players are now raring to join another world – class Taekwondo competition.
“Our athletes have great potentials to become medalists in the Southeast Asean Competition and even in the Olympic games,” he said.
As to their preparation before the recent tournament they attended, he said that his team underwent a month-long rigid training aside from participating several local competitions as their physical conditioning activity.
He revealed that from the 23 original delegation members of the “Taekwondo Team Ilocos Sur,” only 12 had attended the tournament due to financial constraints.
“There is a great possibility that the team might have won more medals if the other half of the delegation were able to join the tournament. However, we are hoping that in the future more sponsors will extend their help for giving a chance for our talented children to showcase their Taekwondo skills in the international contest,” he said.
For his part, Governor Singson congratulated the members of “Team Ilocos Sur.” He said that the achievement of the team members will eventually draw inspiration to the youths in the province.
The medalists were the following: for category Kyorligi (Sparring Competition) - gold: Jorel Singson, Trisha Mae Pre and Randy Ilar Jr.; silver medalists: Jamela Mae Paligutan, Julian Marius Unciano, James Paolo Tablada and Angelito Valle; and bronze: Fitz Darrell Silario, Camille Angelika Reintar and Vlaizen Airelle Ines.
