Orcollo bags world 8-ball crown Orcollo27_949

Filipino bet Dennis Orcollo jumped out the gates, had a few bumps, but nonetheless cruised past Niels Feijen, 10-3, to clinch the WPA World 8-Ball title Saturday night (Manila time) in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

The 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist pounced on a costly error by Feijen in the ninth rack that proved to be the story of the match as the Filipino champion clinched five straight racks en route to another title in his belt.

The 32-year-old Orcollo, who beat David Alcaide of Spain in the semifinals 9-3, dominated early and raced to a 5-0 spread before a scratch in the sixth rack saw his foe claw back and move to within 3-5.

But that was the last that Orcollo let Feijen score as he went all the way from that point, with the veteran European campaigner failing to keep his run going with a flubbed four-ball in the ninth rack.

Feijen had his chances but couldn’t capitalize on Orcollo’s rare miscues while also having his fair share of errors throughout the match.

The Dutchman, who easily disposed of Great Britain’s Darren Appleton, 9-0, in the final four, had another crack at the table when Orcollo again scratched in the 12th rack but Feijen blew his chance by going long early on his shot.

Their last meeting was actually no different, as Orcollo also crushed Feijen in 2008, 13-15, for the Qatar World 9-Ball Open trophy.

Orcollo was relegated to the survival bracket early in the competition after dropping his assignment against compatriot Efren “Bata” Reyes, but was spotless in his campaign from then on save from a heart-wrenching 9-8 win over Vincent Facquet of France in the round-of-32.
