MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said Friday that it was considering filing a tax evasion case against the wife of a former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) involving the purchase of properties in the US.
During a Senate hearing last Monday, Senator Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada presented pictures of two houses in the US allegedly owned by Erlinda Yambao-Ligot, wife of retired Lieutenant General Jacinto Ligot.
One of the houses was at 7102 Stanton Avenue, Buena Park, California which was bought in cash worth $183,868 in 2002.
The second property is at 1240 South Cabernet Circle in Anaheim, California, which was worth $504,000 when allegedly bought by Ligot’s wife on Dec. 23, 2003.
“If it the properties are under the name of the wife, then the case will be directed at her because she managed to buy properties without reporting any income,” BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares said over Radyo Inquirer's "Tapatan" with Jay Sonza and Den Macaranas.
“Tax evasion is personal to the person,” she added.
Henares reiterated that they were closely monitoring the Senate and Congressional inquiries regarding the military fund.“By monitoring the hearing, we can determine the direction of our investigation,” Henares said but confirmed that they were already investigating Ligot.
“Actually we are looking into him,” Henares said but refused to give further details, addng "we cannot broadcast what we have been doing.
Ligot served as military comptroller when the late Angelo Reyes was chief of staff.
